Congratulations to Siyang Li for Summer Internship at Google

Congratulations to Siyang Li for Summer Internship at Google

Siyang Li, a PhD student in MCLab, obtained an intern offer from Google. Congratulations! We have an interview with her about internship hunting.

What is the normal intern hiring procedure and how did you prepare for it?

For internship in big tech companies, usually we can apply online or through internal referral. If the resume review goes well, we can proceed to phone interviews, solving some programming problems. That definitely requires a lot of practice. I spent several months on it last year. After passing the phone interviews, there are team matching interviews and we need to find out the most suitable team to work with. Good communication skills would help. Sometimes, you have to go through several matching interviews before getting an offer.
I did an intern last year at Google and this year I get a returning offer, which is a lot easier as long as one performs well in previous interns.

How was it like working at Google?

My colleagues were quite helpful. My host was always happy to answer any question and I did ask a lot. The working environment was also quite relaxing. You can get free meals and snacks every day. There are also gyms and video game rooms. Now those facilities become a standard in software industry but I think it was Google who started it.

Any suggestions for your fellows?

I think PhD students should be careful about team matching when searching interns. Working on a project closely related the research topic would be an ideal situation; otherwise, it is better to think twice before accepting an offer. Of course, this strategy increases the risk of not getting an offer, so I would suggest starting intern hunting early. Starting early means more [...]

Introduction to MCL Alumnus Koretzky and his start-up Tunesplit

Introduction to MCL Alumnus Koretzky and his start-up Tunesplit

Alejandro Koretzky, a MCL alumnus, is currently working on his own start-up company named Tunesplit. We had an interview as well as a friendly conversation with him.

Alejandro came from Argentina in 2013 to pursue a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, specializing in multimedia and creative technologies. His focus is on signal processing and machine learning.

During his study, he developed a strong interest in source separation and decided to conduct research in this field. Being a musician (both singer and writer), Alejandro became interested in developing an algorithm that automatically decomposes audio according to its sources (e.g. guitar, keyboard, singer, etc.). This would give the user the ability to access and manipulate the individual sources within an audio mix, and thus, personalize the music listening experience. To make it convenient for the users, this splitting process needs to be conducted in real time. In order to make his idea come true, Alejandro took Directed Research with Professor Kuo, who not only supervised him in research but also helped him establish connections with other people.

Starting from the first prototype, an iPhone app, Alejandro converted his idea to a real product and entered the battlefield of business as well. His team was selected by the Viterbi Startup Garage, a program which provides support in funding, space, strategic, and financial resources. Currently, he is focusing on connecting his product with Spotify.

Reflecting on his experiences as a member of MCL, Alejandro says he is very proud of the lab. He believes it is not only a great place for conducting research, but also a great place to connect with other people and learn about other research projects. He also would like to share the following advice with us and [...]

1. Could you briefly introduce yourself? (Previous research experience, project experience, research interest and expertise)

My name is Zhehang Ding, from China. I earned a bachelor’s degree from Hangzhou Dianzi University in Electronic and Information Engineering. In the last year of my undergraduate study I attended a program in Queen’s University Belfast, UK and finished my thesis about augmented reality there. After that, I became a master student in USC to study image processing and pattern recognition.

I have been an amateur astronomer and photographer for about eight years. So playing with images is just like a part of my daily life. I am very interested in the techniques involved as well. Furthermore, I am extremely curious about the nature of consciousness and intelligence, especially about how to teach computer to see and think. It is these interests that led me into image processing first and then the world of computer vision finally . I feel that I really have to learn much more, from both knowledge and methodology, in order to satisfy my curiosity. Therefore I applied a directed research program and joined MCL this semester.

2. What’s your first impression of USC and MCL?

After being living almost all my life in humid eastern China and recently in pastoral Northern Ireland, I feel both strange and curious living in this dessert-like city. USC for me is like a oasis in this dessert, not only for its natural environment and architectures, but also for the active academic atmosphere and its rich cultural activities.

When I first attended the MCL ‘s seminar, I was impressed and actually shocked by these [...]

Sachin Chachada passed his defense

Sachin Chachada, a MCL member, has passed his defense on Jan 14, 2016. Congratulations!
His dissertation title is “Classification and Retrieval of Environmental Sounds”. Speech and music signals have been extensively studied for several decades. Need for Environmental Sound Recognition (ESR) system has picked up the pace in recent years. Environmental sounds are quotidian sounds, both natural and artificial, i.e. sounds one encounters in daily life other than speech and music. In this thesis, Narrow Band Time Frequency features are proposed which characterize a signal using TF representation of its band limited filtered signal. In order to further improve the performance, use of a novel multi-classifier approach, Para-Boost (PB) model, is proposed. It takes the advantages of all the features and improves the overall performance of ESR system. Finally, considering the exponential growing environmental sound data on the Internet, the thesis tackles the problem of a good content based retrieval system. A two stage content based environmental sound retrieval system is proposed. This query-by-example retrieval system assumes that the database is partially labeled. In Stage I, a broad categorization of environmental sounds based on their signal-characteristic is done. For each category, a classifier is trained to predict labels for unlabeled data in the database and also narrow search range for a query by assigning it multiple, yet limited, class labels. In Stage II, a novel feature and a scoring scheme to do local matching and ranking is proposed. An audio signal is first segmented in an unsupervised manner using Mean Shift algorithm and each segment is represented by its point of convergence in the feature space. The audio signal is finally represented by its energy distribution over each segment thereby capturing the temporal variations [...]
