We are very happy to welcome a new MCL member, Kenny Gan. Here is a quick interview with Kenny:

1. Could you briefly introduce yourself and your research interests?

My name is Chee Kim Gan, but everyone calls me Kenny. I am a first-year Ph.D. student in ECE at USC. Before joining USC, I received my B.S. and M.S. degrees from National Taiwan University and worked as an engineer in Taiwan, developing algorithms for camera systems-on-chip (SoCs). My research interests lie in machine learning and low-level vision, including image and video processing, computational imaging, and etc. Outside of research, I enjoy running, playing badminton, watching movies and anime, and exploring coffee.

2. What is your impression of MCL and USC?

MCL is a large and welcoming research group. The senior members have been incredibly supportive and helpful, not only with my research, but also with helping me adapt to my new life in Los Angeles. Everyone is very willing to spend time discussing research ideas with me, and I am truly grateful for that. As for USC, I enjoy its beautiful campus filled with iconic red-brick buildings. The students also come from a wide variety of backgrounds, creating many opportunities to learn about different cultures and perspectives.

3. What is your future expectation and plan in MCL?

My first project at MCL will focus on image coding, and I hope to build a solid understanding in multimedia compression through this work. In the future, I would also like to explore projects related to computational imaging and contribute to solving real-world problems through my research.
