Alumni – Visiting Scholars/Students

Chenhui Yang

Chenhui Yang received his BS and MS degree from National University of Defense Technology, China, in 1989 and 1992, respectively. After he got his PhD degree from ZheJiang University, China, in 1995, he joined the computer science department in Xiamen Univeristy, where he has been appointed as a professor since 2005. From March 1999 to March 2000, he was a visiting scholar in University of Chicago/Argonne National Laboratory. From August 2014, he was a visiting scholar in USC. His research interest areas cover intelligent multimedia and machine learning, including video-audio analysis, image recognition, 3D reconstruction and simulation, 3D printing, big data and cloud computing. He was also interested in finding computational solutions to some problems proposed from other disciplines or industry, such as intelligent transportation, intelligent security, bioinformatics, health and medical informatics, smart city, computational sociology, etc.

Yongfei Zhang

Yongfei Zhang received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and Ph.D. degree in Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Systems, both from Beihang University, Beijing, China, in 2005 and 2011 respectively. He is now an Associate Professor with the Beijing Key Laboratory of Digital Media, School of Computer Science and Engineering, and the State Key Laboratory of Virtual Reality Technology and Systems, Beihang University, Beijing, China. He was a visiting scholar at University of Missouri, Columbia from Sept. 2007 to Sept. 2009 and a visiting scholar at Media Communications Lab (MCL) at University of Southern California (USC) under the supervision of Prof. C.-C. Jay Kuo. His current research interests include real-time high efficiency video coding/decoding, computer vision (image retrieval, vehicle/person re-ID), domain-specific knowledge graphs (construction & referencing and applications).

Xiaoguang Li

Xiaoguang Li received his B.E and Ph. D degrees in electronic engineering and circuit and system from the Beijing University of Technology, Beijing China, in 2003 and 2008 respectively. He is presently an associate professor of the Faculty of Information Technology, Beijing University of Technology. He was a research assistant at Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2006, 2007 and 2009 and a visiting scholar at the University of Sydney from Feb. to Jul. 2012. He was a visiting scholar at Media Communications Lab (MCL) at University of Southern California (USC) under the supervision of Prof. C.-C. Jay Kuo. His research interests include image super resolution, face hallucination, high dynamic range image processing and medical image analysis.

Songbin Li

Songbin Li received the Ph.D from the National Network New Media Engineering Research Center (3NMedia), Institute of Acoustics, Chinese Academy of Science in 2010 and then he worked as a post-doctor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at Tsinghua University. His research interests focus on multimedia signal processing especially on multimedia forensics and security, steganography, and steganalysis. He is also interested in some creative technology related to network new media, such as computer animation and film special effects production technology.

Rui Song

Rui Song received his Bachelor degree in Telecommunications, Master and Ph.D. degrees in Signal and Information Processing from Xidian University, Xi'an, china, in 2003, 2006 and 2009, respectively. From 2013 to 2014, he is a Postdoctoral Scholar in Professor C.C.Jay-Kuo's Group, Ming Hsieh Department, Viterbi School of Electric Engineering, University of Southern California, USA. Since 2010, Dr. Rui Song has been an Associate Professor in School of Telecommunication Engineering at Xidian University, Xi'an, China. He is now a member of Image and Video Processing Lab in State Key Laboratory of Integrated Service Networks, and is responsible for video group. His research interests include video coding algorithms, VLSI architecture design for image and video processing, IP design of video codec IP, Pre- and Post-processing of High Definition Camera. He has published 16 research papers which are indexed by EI or SCI and has got 4 patents. Zhaojun Nie

Zhaojun Nie received the BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Xi’an Institute of Post & Telecommunication in 2007, and received MSc degree in Optoelectronics Engineering from Beijing Institute of Technology, China, in 2009. She received the PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering from McMaster University at Canada in June, 2014. Since November 2014, she joined Media Communications Lab at University of Southern California (USC) as a visiting scholar. Her researches focus on biomedical image processing and clinical data analysis to increase the diagnostic accuracy of tumor detection.

Seyoon Jeong

Seyoon Jeong received his BS, MS degrees from Inha University in 1995, and 1997, respectively. He received his Ph.D degree from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Aug. 2014. In December 1996, he joined the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Media Research Laboratory of Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) as a principal researcher. He has many contributions to development of international standards such as Scalable Video Coding (SVC), High Efficient Video Coding (HEVC). His current research interests are in video coding, super resolution and parallel computing for realistic broadcasting applications such as 3DTV and UHDTV.

Zhengning Wang

Zhengning Wang received the B.E. and Ph.D. degrees from Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU), Chengdu, China, in 2000 and 2007, respectively. From 2009 to 2011, he worked as post-doctoral fellow in the second research institute of Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), where he served as a project leader on the Remote Air Traffic Control Tower. He is currently an associate professor at the school of Electronic Engineering, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC). From October 2014, he is visiting Media Communication Lab at University of Southern California (USC), USA as a visiting scholar. His research interests are image and video processing, intelligent transportation system, multimedia communication systems and applications.

Xiaoyi Yu

Xiaoyi Yu received the Ph.D from Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Science, Beijing, China in 2005, and M.S from Hunan University, Changsha, China in 2002. Since December 2013, he has been a visiting scholar in Media Communications Lab at University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles. His research interests include image steganography, image steganalysis and visual surveillance.

Wen-Jiin Tsai

Wen-Jiin Tsai received the Ph.D and B.S. degrees, both in Computer Science from National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, Taiwan in 1997 and 1993, respectively. Since August 2013, she has been a visiting scholar in Media Communications Lab at University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles. Her research interests include video codec, video quality assessment and UHD video signal processing.

Hui Yong Kim

Hui Yong Kim received his BS, MS, and Ph.D degrees from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 1994, 1998, and 2004, respectively. From 2003 to 2005, he was the leader of Multimedia Research Team of AddPac Technology Co. Ltd. In November 2005, he joined the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Media Research Laboratory of Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) as a senior researcher. From 2006 to 2010, he was also an adjunct professor at University of Science and Technology (UST), Korea. From September 2013, he visited Media Communications Lab at University of Southern California (USC), USA as a visiting scholar. He has many contributions to development of international standards such as MPEG Multimedia Application Format (MAF) and JCT-VC High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). His current research interest is in image and video signal processing and compression for realistic media applications such as UHDTV and 3DTV.

Lei Deng

Dr. Deng Lei received the B.S. degree from the JiLin university, ChangChun, China in 1998 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, China in 2000 and 2006, respectively, all in Computer Science and Engineering. From July 2006 to July 2008, he was post doctor in the School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science at the Peking University. Since March 2009, he has been with the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Science. He is presently the research assistant professor of Key Laboratory of Intelligent Information Processing. From Jan. 2013 to Jan. 2014, he was a visiting scholar in Media Communications Lab at USC. His research interests are in the areas of visual quality and perceptual coding, video compression, and video algorithm and hardware design. Currently, he is the author or co-author of 20 papers and 10 Chinese patents, and he finished 4 projects sponsored by Chinese governmental foundation or corporation foundation.
