Welcome Summer Intern Student Jeffrey Maierhofer

We are so happy to welcome a new summer intern student, Jeffrey Maierhofer, in Summer 2017. Let us hear what he said about his research and MCL.

1. Could you briefly introduce yourself? (Previous research experience, project experience, research interest and expertise)

My name is Jeffrey “Matt” Maierhofer. I am currently an undergraduate student at the University of Colorado Boulder studying Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. In the past I have done some research in numerical solvers for complex differential equations. I am also interested in applications of mathematics that involve a heavy combination of computer science and mathematics.

2. What’s your first impression of USC and MCL?

My first impression of USC was how beautiful the campus was. The weather has been wonderful, and the campus itself is really pleasing to walk through. MCL is by far the largest research group that I’ve ever been a part of, and i really like how it promotes collaboration within the lab.

3. What’s your future expectation for MCL?

I hope to learn as much as possible during my summer in MCL and hope to get to know a lot of cool people!

Welcome Summer Intern Student Derenik Haghverdian

We are so happy to welcome a new summer intern student, Derenik Haghverdian, in Summer 2017. Let us hear what he said about his research and MCL.

1. Could you briefly introduce yourself? (Previous research experience, project experience, research interest and expertise)

My name is Derenik Haghverdian. I am a rising senior at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) majoring in Applied Mathematics with a minor in Statistics. I am interested in the application of mathematics in solving ambitious questions and challenges. I have recently been engaged with machine learning and neural networks, and I see a great growth potential in this field.
I am also very passionate about photography, and I am a professional Flamenco guitar player.

2. What’s your first impression of USC and MCL?

People at MCL were very welcoming and supportive of their new lab members. MCL is full of talented and ambitious individuals with strong academic and research backgrounds. I am honored to be a part of this great team and have the chance to learn and collaborate with them.

3. What’s your future expectation for MCL?

I want to develop a solid foundation in deep learning in my experience at MCL, so I can apply my knowledge and expertise to future projects in this field. I am confident that under the supervision of Professor Kuo and his amazing and professional team I will gain valuable experience in this field.

Welcome Summer Intern Student Sreedhar Radhakrishnan

We are so happy to welcome a new summer intern student, Sreedhar Radhakrishnan, in Summer 2017. Let us hear what he said about his research and MCL.

1. Could you briefly introduce yourself? (Previous research experience, project experience, research interest and expertise)

Hi, I am Sreedhar, I am currently an undergrad senior in Computer Science and Engineering at PES University,Bangalore,India and Data Science excites me. After my freshman year I interned at a research centre at my university where I was introduced to methodologies of research and I worked in the area of Computer Vision. The following year I had coursework in Design and Analysis of Algorithms and Linear Algebra which I fell in love with as I was able to get a perspective of how they are used in real world problems based on my research after my freshman year. The summer after sophomore year I worked on data analysis applied in the sport of Cricket and developed a player evaluation metric through the same. This really got me interested in leveraging the power of data in numerous applications. I then had course work in Data Analytics, Natural Language Processing, Digital Image Processing and Big Data which are some of my favorite courses. I am currently interested in Machine Learning and Deep Learning and their applications in various fields such as Computer Vision and NLP. I am currently working on Deep Learning for Computer Vision and learning a lot under the guidance of Dr. Kuo and fellow MCL members.

2. What’s your first impression of USC and MCL?

Welcome Summer Intern Student Abhishek Panigrahi

We are so happy to welcome a new summer intern student, Abhishek Panigrahi, in Summer 2017. Let us hear what he said about his research and MCL.

1. Could you briefly introduce yourself and your research interests?

My name is Abhishek Panigrahi. I am a fourth year undergraduate student in  the department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Kharagpur. I have come for my summer internship in MCL. I like mathematics and its applications in various tasks. I have also developed an interest for machine learning and deep learning. The scope that I see for myself in deep learning is that a lot of things are still unanswered and require mathematics to describe “why they work?”. It’s my desire to solve the deepest secrets of deep learning models with mathematics.

2. What is your impression about MCL and USC?

I have already spent a couple of weeks here. Based on my experience, people here in MCL are really helpful. I am enjoying myself here. So far I have met a great group of motivated and passionate individuals all offering unique perspectives. The thing that I like about all of them is that there is a friendship bond binding all of them and it didn’t take much time for that bond to bind me as well. I shall try to know all of them, their research and be a part of this immense network by the end of my 2 month stay.

3. What is your future expectation and plan in MCL?

My ambition here is to try to learn the working of residual network and see if I can apply mathematics to do so. My another ambition is to make new friends here and interact with all of them, so [...]

Welcome New MCL Lab Member Shilpashree Rao

We are so happy to welcome a new master student, Shilpashree Rao, in Summer 2017. Let us hear what she said about her research and MCL.

1. Could you briefly introduce yourself and your research interests?

My name is Shilpashree Rao, pursuing Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at University of Southern California. My research interests include Image Processing, Computer Vision, Machine learning and Robotics. The collaboration of innovation and knowledge describes my life wherein my interest towards these areas was sown by my ardor for art and creativity. I have previously advanced research studies on imaging techniques for facial expression detection and face recognition mechanisms for bio-metric applications. The research results have been published in National and IEEE publications. I have always enjoyed developing robots for social cause and I look forward to progress this with amalgamation of Machine learning, Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence technologies.

2. What is your impression about MCL and USC?

I like the liveliness and the dynamic environment at USC. The people I have met here are focused, intelligent and of course fun-loving! USC and the location itself is great to build professional network. The opportunities to learn and explore recent technologies are unlimited here. MCL is one such lab at USC which nurtures such motivated students, providing resources and learning for advanced practical applications.

3. What is your future expectation and plan in MCL?

My future expectation at the MCL lab is to develop my skills and learning in deep learning techniques and image processing. To innovate and utilize these skills for practical purposes.

Welcome New MCL Lab Member Chang Xu

We are so happy to welcome a new master student, Chang Xu, in Summer 2017. Let us hear what he said about his research and MCL.

1. Could you briefly introduce yourself and your research interests?

My name is Chang Xu, I am a graduate student at USC pursuing Electrical Engineering Degree. I used to study Automation in my undergraduate study. However, after I learned something relate to data science and machine learning, I found that I love to pursue machine learning path to do something for the data. I have passion for learning computer languages like, C++ and python and love applying what I have learned in electrical engineering into practice by some projects.

2. What is your impression about MCL and USC?

I have already been in USC for a year. I love the environment and academic atmosphere here. USC has best professors in the world and enough research resources for students. The MCL is a community of passionate and intelligent students who pursue their research relate to communication and data. I love talking to people in MCL because I can learn a lot of knowledge every time.

3. What is your future expectation and plan in MCL?

To be honest, after taking the course EE569, I love convolutional neural network and machine learning. I want to learn more about them and apply them into some real practice. I hope I can get familiar with how to conduct real research and get to know the fantastic parts of academic life.

Welcome New MCL Lab Member Zhuwei Xu

We are so happy to welcome a new master student, Zhuwei Xu, in Summer 2017. Let us hear what she said about her research and MCL.

1. Could you briefly introduce yourself and your research interests?

My name is Zhuwei Xu, a master student in Electronic Engineering Department. I pursued my undergraduate degree in Electronic Science and Technology in Sichuan University. I have an interest of research in new fields. I like to know the latest techniques and apply them to different problems. I learnt a lot about signal processing and probability. I would like to be a researcher and explore the unknown knowledge. Nowadays, my research interests are machine learning and image processing.

2. What is your impression about MCL and USC?

I consider MCL is a great laboratory for me, since I would like to make some contribution in multimedia. Also, I think machine learning is a great idea for many new fields, so I am eager to apply some machine learning ideas on multimedia things.

USC is an outstanding university, it has many excellent faculties and peers in EE department. I want to learn from them and improve my abilities.

3. What is your future expectation and plan in MCL?

My research direction will focus on ‘object localization and classification’ this summer. I hope I can know more things about multimedia, machine learning and how to do research. I would like to do some exciting works, and build connections with people in this laboratory.

Welcome New MCL Lab Member Xuejing Lei

We are so happy to welcome a new master student, Xuejing Lei, in Summer 2017. Let us hear what she said about her research and MCL.

1. Could you briefly introduce yourself and your research interests?

I’m Xuejing Lei, a graduate student pursuing an Electrical Engineering MS degree at USC. I received my B.S. degree from the School of Electronic and Information Engineering, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Xi’an, China in 2016. In my senior year, my partner and I designed an EEG-based control 3D games using motor imagery BCI. That is, subject can play simple games such as reduced Fruit-Cut or Mario by doing some motor imagery or not. Now, my research interest is to learn more about CNN and DNN in image processing and machine learning.

2. What is your impression about MCL and USC?

I have met a group of motivated and intelligent individuals in USC and MCL. Professor Kuo is very kind and professional. Everyone I will ever meet knows something I don’t. I hope I can communicate with them and learn more from them.

3. What is your future expectation and plan in MCL?

I will focus on research of object detection from video this summer. I hope to consolidate my knowledge of image processing, especially CNN and DNN and learn more about development trends of image processing and computer vision. Besides, meeting new individuals is also very attractive. I can’t wait to know them all and make lasting connection with them.

Congratulations to Yuzhuo Ren, Chi-Hao Wu, Qin Huang and Weihao Gan in Attending the PhD Hooding Ceremony

Four MCL members attended the Viterbi PhD hooding ceremony on Thursday, May 11, 2017, from 8:00-11:00 a.m. in the Bovard Auditorium. They were Yuzhuo Ren, Chi-Hao Wu, Qin Huang and Weihao Gan. Congratulations to them and their families for their accomplishments in completing their PhD program at USC.

Yuzhuo Ren received her B.S. degree in Hebei University of Technology, China, in 2011 and the M.S. degree from University of Southern California (USC) in 2013. Her research interest is the field of computer vision. Her thesis title is “Machine Learning Techniques for Outdoor and Indoor Layout Estimation”.

Qin Huang received the B.E. in Southeast University, Nanjing, China in 2012 and received the M.S. in Electrical Engineering at USC. He has been in Prof. Kuo’s Media Communications Lab since Nov 2013. His research interests include image and video processing, digital compression and computer vision.

Chi-Hao Wu received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in computer science from National Taiwan University in 2004 and 2006, respectively. He has rich experiences as a software engineer responsible for algorithm design in multimedia fields in Mediatek and IMEC Taiwan Innovation Center. Since 2013, he began his PhD study with Media Communications Lab at USC. His research interests include multimedia signal processing, multi-view image processing and computer vision.

Weihao Gan received his B.S. degree in automation from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in July, 2012. Then he finished his M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering at USC in May 2014. Since June 2013, he has been with Media Communications Lab. Now he is a PhD student in MCL, whose research interests include computer vision, machine learning and visual perception.

Welcome New MCL Lab Member Shanshan Cai

We are so happy to welcome a new master student, Shanshan Cai, in Summer 2017. Let us hear what she said about her research and MCL.

1. Could you briefly introduce yourself and your research interests?
My name is Shanshan Cai. I am a graduate student in Electrical Engineering at the University of Southern California. I received my Bachelor’s Degree at Jilin University (China), where I worked in a student lab as a Team Leader for two years.  My field of interest is in signal processing, especially image processing.
2. What is your impression about MCL and USC?
Prof. Kuo is a creative and kind supervisor. He always promotes some useful ideas for the project. I was also impressed by the diligence of the members in the lab. They are motivated and hardworking, focusing on their research. I would like to join them and contribute to the fashion project.
3. What is your future expectation and plan in MCL?
My expectation is that I can learn more knowledge about convolutional network and support teammates with implementing fashion project. I also hope that I can make friends with members in the lab.
