We are so happy to welcome a new summer intern student, Abhishek Panigrahi, in Summer 2017. Let us hear what he said about his research and MCL.

1. Could you briefly introduce yourself and your research interests?

My name is Abhishek Panigrahi. I am a fourth year undergraduate student in  the department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Kharagpur. I have come for my summer internship in MCL. I like mathematics and its applications in various tasks. I have also developed an interest for machine learning and deep learning. The scope that I see for myself in deep learning is that a lot of things are still unanswered and require mathematics to describe “why they work?”. It’s my desire to solve the deepest secrets of deep learning models with mathematics.

2. What is your impression about MCL and USC?

I have already spent a couple of weeks here. Based on my experience, people here in MCL are really helpful. I am enjoying myself here. So far I have met a great group of motivated and passionate individuals all offering unique perspectives. The thing that I like about all of them is that there is a friendship bond binding all of them and it didn’t take much time for that bond to bind me as well. I shall try to know all of them, their research and be a part of this immense network by the end of my 2 month stay.

3. What is your future expectation and plan in MCL?

My ambition here is to try to learn the working of residual network and see if I can apply mathematics to do so. My another ambition is to make new friends here and interact with all of them, so that I can have a small view of the research going on in MCL. I will try to interact with Professor Kuo as much as I can and know a bit about his experience in the field of deep learning. After all, research is fun when there is such a healthy environment as in MCL.
